The hearing screen was just...neat! The audiologist put Jacob and I in a little room with speakers on the right and left sides of the room. On top of the speakers were these black Plexiglas boxes. The one on the left had a duckie and the one on the right had a doggie. Momma had to be very quiet and a sound came through like thunder, they judged his reactions and either the duckie or the doggie would move. They kept doing the left, but he wanted to see the doggie. Jacob was a very good boy though!
She also repeated a test that was done in our pediatricians office. I can't remember the name of it...
According to the Audiologist, Jacob's receptive hearing is good. She said she was a little surprised based on this other test that I can't remember the name of. She said it's his expressive or communicative hearing that needs some work. They will send these results back to our pediatrician and his office will be contacting us to schedule the referral to the ENT.
I also spoke to Early On this morning. They also found Jacob's expressive communication to be a little delayed. They are coming out on Thursday 1/31 at 3PM to establish an "Individualized Family Service Plan" with us. Translation: he does qualify for services at this time. I don't know if they will be coming out to work with him or if they are going to give us exercises to do with him or how it's going to work. It may also change after we meet with the ENT.
My Jacob was a trooper today. I was so proud. The Audiologist gave him a puppy sticker that he's proudly wearing on his sweater and he got a lolli-pop from Momma.
I'm okay, he's okay, we're okay. It's not life threatening and he can hear. We'll get through it. We'll do what we have to do. We'll be fine but, if you want to call and talk to us...we'd like that too!

Postponed...
Early On called and left a message - when the public schools are closed, they're closed too. They won't be out today and will reschedule for a later date.
We also heard back from the Dr. today. Jacob has an appointment with an audiologist . It's January 28 at 9:30 AM. I'm very interested in what she's going to do to test a 2 year old!

I just wanna sew, sew, sew...
We had Jacob's recheck with the pediatrician this morning. They checked both ears and there still is fluid - the eardrums appear to be thicker which means fluid is present - right ear was worse than the left. The Dr. is ordering a hearing screen and we'll go from there. Jacob is also 33.5" tall and weighs 28 lbs.
Early On comes back tomorrow afternoon to give their formal report. My instincts are telling me that it will come back just like before - "Yes, he's a little delayed in some things in his age group but, he did score some requirements above his age group therefore we can't help him at this time." I hope my instincts are right.
Both of the boys are much better today. Jeremy worked through his bug by sleeping most of the day. Jacob took a 3 hour nap and seemed to be back on track. When we were at the Dr. today the nurse said that there is a nasty bug going around...just like what we had and that just when you think it's done, it gives you one more punch. Nice.
I ran away for an hour or so yesterday . I hadn't left the house since Friday afternoon and I needed a break from those pukers. I ran to the dollar store for a lap desk for Jacob (he likes having picnics) and down to the fabric store to finish a quilt that my sister's and I started over 2 years ago. I have the quilt blocked, framed, and pinned. I bought my fabric to make the binding while I was out. I have to do the quilting and bind it and she'll be done! Then what can I sew?
I've been a sew-aholic lately. I just want to sew, sew, sew. I want to make more sheets, finish these quilts (I have 3 going BTW), make a baseball quilt and more, more, more. I find myself wandering the fabric stores in a daze - "ooh, look at all the pritty colors..."

Duh, duh, duh, duh, DUH!
This past week I have been nothing but one big DUH! I forgot my niece's birthday. I talked to my mom this morning and then called her back to tell her Happy Birthday. Geez!
I guess you could say I have a few things on my mind: a new job, Jacob's ears, Jacob's evaluation appointments, our lack of a front yard, the means to pay for a new front yard....and more. We're at the tail end of some of it now, and I promise, I'll get my head back straight.
Jacob was sick all of Friday night, through the night, threw up again Saturday AM, and threw up in his bed again last night. He's much more normal today but still isn't eating much. I heard once that the best relief comes once you've given it away. Jeremy wasn't feeling so well when he left for work last night. He started throwing up this morning. I hope I'm not next...
Congratulations to our friends over at Here we go...! Adam Matthew is beautiful!

"It looks like a crime scene... "

I had the urge to draw a body outline in the sand yesterday. Not resembling a human, of course. Something like a pig or a cow. Why not? It would give everyone that stares as they're driving past a real eyeful.
Jacob's evaluation went well yesterday. They did say his gross motor skills appear to be a little off as he won't kick a ball or stand on one foot. As for his speech - Jacob looked at one of the girls who had put a toy car back into her bag and said "Where's your car?". So much for speech delays! The speech therapist said that she couldn't give us even a guess as the scoring is quite complicated. She did say that every time she has given someone a guess, she's been wrong.
I worked a half day from home yesterday for Jacob's evaluation. I was on the way home from my hair appointment and called home. Jacob had thrown up all over himself and his little boy bed. We cleaned everything up and spent the day cuddling, crying, and throwing up. He didn't sleep well last night. He threw up again this morning. He's napping now and hopefully is better this afternoon.

Oh, what a mess...
I had said earlier that my front yard is gone, I wasn't kidding. I no longer have a front yard. From the curb to the house, all I have is wet clay mud. We lost 2 sections of sidewalk, my tree surround is smushed, my flower beds are destroyed. We don't even have so much as 1 blade of grass left. We're talking rent a bobcat, truck in some dirt, and more grass seed than you have ever seen. Oh, and did I mention, some of our neighbors yard is gone too?
Now - let me say this...Our plumbers were fantastic! They did everything they could. They tried so hard not to damage anything. They worked and dug at the sidewalk and tried to save it but the pipe just wouldn't come loose. Besides, they estimate that we lost hundreds of thousands of gallons of water and a lot of it was in the front yard. When they were digging, they were pulling up buckets of mud and muddy water.
I still have to get a hold of the city to mark or resolve the raised and broken sidewalk. Which they can't do anyway until probably spring - I just don't want someone to trip and lose their teeth! Once the sidewalk is fixed, we will be spending a lot of time putting our yard back together.
**UPDATE** I did contact the city. They are sending a guy out to look at the sidewalk and see what they can do to make people aware. They are going to give or deny us permission to remove 2 trees (I figured, as long as we're all torn up, we might as well get the trees out too!) and they will also work up an estimate to repair our sidewalk. He also said, that since it was our contractor, it's our responsibility. - even the easement. I also have a call in to the plumber to see if they can at least come back and level us out.
If anyone out there can run a bobcat, hold a shovel or a rake, needs firewood, or can volunteer some time to watch a child - your help would be appreciated!
Now for the good news...Lake Harper is GONE! Our basement is almost dry, dry from the lake and dry from the cleaning we had to do after the mud came in.
I am possibly looking at a change in my job. I'm not going to post too many details about it yet. Should your curiosity motivate you to call me, we'll talk about it. I will say that I am excited, it is an advancement, and a change in my merit.
Jacob's big evaluation is tomorrow morning at 11:30. He's been...yesterday my word for it, out of complete frustration was a$$hole...but, let's say just say challenging - for the past 2 days. Very whiny, tantrum-y, going limp, throwing himself on the floor, etc. Very unlike my Jacob. We're hoping 1- that it's frustration from a lack of communication, 2- this bug that he's trying to catch, 3- lack of sleep, 4- the pressure in his ears is bothering, or 5 - all of the above. He's been waking up at 5 or 5:30 AM and takes a short nap, then to bed at 8. I'm crossing my fingers that he cooperates with the therapist...
Oh - and to my very good friend and his wife over at "Here we go..." - I'm praying for a quick and easy delivery of a healthy, beautiful baby and good health for his momma too. Good luck guys!

Big trucks and diggers!
The plumbers are here (and my front yard is gone)! Jacob is having a hard time deciding what to do. They came with 2 big box trucks and then...another flat bed truck came and dropped off a mini-digger! We also bought a Lion King II movie from eBay and we're watching that too. So we go from front window - where the digger is, to the kitchen window for the 1st big truck to the TV to watch the lions. It's a busy, busy day!

End Round 1...DING!
We completed the intake this morning with Early On. I signed all the forms for them to evaluate Jacob and release the information to everyone. Did you know that they can release his issues/progress to the public school as well to be monitored through pre and elementary school? That's cool!
The woman who came to get our information is an early development teacher. She asked a lot of questions, no where near what we'll get on Friday. Jacob did interact with her quite a bit - my un-shy boy. She did say that since the fluid in Jacob's ears has been present for some time that he did miss a very important learning period by not being able to hear clearly. The full evaluation is Friday...we'll know more then.
And the chimney liner guy - yeah, he didn't show.

The little boy bed...
Jacob is now out of his crib and into his little boy bed. The drop rail on the crib kept falling and knocking it crooked. We set up his toddler bed in the living room yesterday and he crawled all over it, got his pillow and blankie and lay down on it for while. Jacob helped us take his crib apart and move it out of his room. He was so proud to help Daddy.
He didn't take a full nap in the little boy bed yesterday. He slept in it for about a half hour. We're not sure if it was the new surroundings or that he's catching a bug. We did keep the same bedding as he was using in his crib...for now, and it's the same mattress. We did rearrange his room too.
I did finish his Go Diego Go! sheets the other night - all that worry, and I have to say I'm a little proud of myself, they look as if I bought them! I didn't have enough fabric to do the top sheet but it's the bottom and the pillowcase that are the toughest to do - and I did it! We haven't Diego-ed his new bed yet...maybe next week. I'll post some pics then.
Anyway, he did sleep all night in his little boy bed. We didn't have any issues. I did put up a rail though and he hasn't figured out how to get over it yet - thankfully. Now, when he wakes up, rather than jumping, he bounces on his knees while holding the rail.

and they're off!
Early On called yesterday and they only have like 30 days to open and complete a case and since we were opened before Christmas, we have to be closed by January 24. It's gonna be crazy for a couple of weeks but here goes:
January 14 - Early On comes to do Jacob's intake and the chimney guy comes
January 15 - The plumber comes to re-route our water main.
January 18 - Early On comes to do Jacob's evaluation.
January 22 - We meet with the pediatrician for Jacob's recheck
January 23 - Early On comes back with their final report.
I'll try to post as we go along so everyone is updated at once.

Amazed
It's amazing sometimes the way the Lord looks out for us. Even through the smallest things.
He gave us two days in January - one 65 degrees and another at 56 degrees - which happened to be the when our furnace decided it was too waterlogged to heat us. So it didn't really matter that we were without heat. Yes, it's fixed now. Jeremy called our brother-in-law and he reminded Jeremy what to do to fix it. We've had no more issues.
I ran to the consignment store to find JJ a spring jacket for those warm days. I found an almost brand new,Old Navy jacket, and a pair of Oshkosh jeans (the poor kid only has 2 pr. of pants that fit), both less than $7 each. His waist is almost a 3T but his length is about 18 mos. - it's not that we can't buy pants, it's that they don't make them the way we need 'em!
He sent me a really nice woman, Joanne, who is giving (yes, for free) us her old Nextel and all of the accessories after we found out that Nextels don't work after swimming in dishwater. The amazing thing here was I also had almost a full roll of tulle that she needed for her daughter's wedding.
Patience - Jeremy and I have been in a rough spot for a while. He's had a lot of changes at work and in responsibility. His new boss is a lot more hands on, about the business, and down to business. Jeremy has been more accountable at work (which is good) and it seems -less at home. We've had some issues with family, the holidays, the house, the uncertainty with Amber's baby and Jacob's ears. We've been adjusting to so much. It hasn't been easy - in fact, it's been pretty uptight and we weren't communicating as we should have. We, finally talked our way through a lot of it last night and I woke up this morning, feeling some resolution.
I'm still amazed with the gift of my Jacob, the strength he gave me through the Amber/Nevaeh situation. I'm amazed at the healing he has done for me to ease the pain in my heart for the lack of a biological child. I'm not all healed yet but it's on the way.
Hopefully, God is still looking out for us when the chimney liner guy comes...

No more baby talk
Now we have all that baby business out of the way. On to the woes of old house ownership.
I did get our home owner's insurance changed over to the same company that has our auto insurance. Maybe I can save a buck or two.
They're coming to fix our water leak on January 15! Miss-dig was out to the house, we now have a bunch of pretty yellow flags lining our driveway and part of the street. At least we now know where the gas line is! I have to look for some sunshine, somewhere.
We also have to find someone to come and re-line and cap our chimney...again. This liner fills with water every time it rains and now the furnace won't run. Thankfully, it was almost 55 degrees when I left home this morning and Jacob is at Elaine's all day. The schmuck we used to do this the first time won't answer or return our calls. If I ever get ahold of him again...
The fence is falling down, the kitchen light blows a bulb every other week, and the fridge is dripping too. Tell me again - why we bought instead of rented?

She's a cutie!

She looks almost just like Jacob did but smaller.
Speaking of Jacob...he looked at me a little funny while I held Nevaeh. He pet her head and said "Nice...". Then was off to run the halls with his 1st Daddy. He didn't much want anything to do with a baby. We tried to get him to sit and hold her but, he refused.
Amber is just fine. They had a few small issues with bleeding but they have resolved themselves. They both should be going home today depending on the jaundice level. They were going to let them go last night but got the results of Nevaeh's lab work and found the jaundice level to be too high.
We did have an odd moment - I (yes, me), was speechless. Jacob, Rob, and I were in the hall, and Jacob pointed to Rob and said, "Da!". I was a little shocked. Poor Rob..."I didn't tell him anything!". I didn't correct Jacob. He's right - that's his father. I've been curious as to what Jacob is going to call them. I mean, Nevaeh is his little sister, that's what we call her but, as for his 1st parents, I'm at a loss. I think it's best for Jacob to do what he's comfortable with when he's ready. I did tell Jeremy what happened and he's okay with it. Jacob knows who his Daddy is, he's learning who his father is. We have a lot of talking and a lot of explaining to do in our future, it's not going to be easy. Thankfully, Jacob has four parents to explain it to him. I hope we all do it right...

Welcome Nevaeh Miley!!
Nevaeh Miley was born January 4, 2008 at 12:30 PM. She was 6 lbs. 13 ozs. and 19.5 inches. They were in labor all night. Mom and baby are doing fine. Mom is very tired. Jacob and I will go to see them tomorrow afternoon. I'll post some pics when we get home.
I'm okay. I'm fine. Really, I am. I wasn't sure how I'd feel at this moment but I'm happy for them. I'm not sad or disappointed - not even a little bit. Maybe, just maybe, my infertility wounds have healed more than I thought. I say maybe...there are still those people who can send me into the raging, envious, green-eyed monster of jealousy. I don't like those feelings and I hope someday that part heals too.
Thank you so much for all of your prayers, your concerns, and your kind words. I prayed for God's will, whatever it may be, and for the strength to accept it. That's exactly what I got.

She's going in...
Amber just called. She's dialated to 3 and they are inducing labor at 5:00 PM today! Rob is on the way down to pick her up to go to the hospital.
When Jacob was born she went to be induced at 2:00 PM and he was born at 11:45 PM. I would imagine she'll have a baby tomorrow in the early, early AM - though once her water broke, Jacob was out in less than 45 minutes!
She's nervous and she's scared. Scared of the whole bleeding thing. I'm glad Rob is there with her and she's not there alone. I am praying for God's will and the strength to accept it.
I'll be back as soon as she has the baby and yes, I'll post pics of Jay and his new little sister! Jacob and I will go to see her either tomorrow night or Saturday afternoon.

Happy 2008!
I knew the holiday break was going to go quickly, I didn't think it would go this quickly! I did enjoy my time off. I was sad to leave Jacob this morning as he was blowing me kisses, waving, and licking the kitchen window. He still has one more day at home before his routine goes back to normal. He bit me three times yesterday and I'm hoping he gets that out of his system by tomorrow.
I didn't accomplish as much as I would have liked but it was a much enjoyed break. The Christmas tree is down and Christmas has been put away but, I didn't get to sleep in much, or sew Jacob's Diego sheets, make the gift for a friend's new baby, or crochet enough dishcloths to replenish my stock like I had wanted to do. I did, however, play farm, color, race cars, crash cars, watch Lion King, eat spaghetti'os and french fries, and chase after a little madman who hasn't yet learned to steer his Lil' quad so he crashed into EVERYthing. I did get woken up by little pats on my cheek followed by big hugs, and the sweetest little voice yelling "Ma!" one morning. I did accomplish what I really wanted to accomplish, spending some extra time, some quality time with Jacob.
$12,492,752.66 is an interesting number. Yes, that was $12 million. I spent a little of the company's money this year! Yeah, I'm back to work today. I had to add up and put 2007 away before I can jump into 2008 - which is where the $12 million came from. I have some paper that I need to ship to storage, some to move to a different location within my cubicle. Basically a move over to start over. I'm really curious as to what that number will be next year?
Speaking of numbers, here's another - $2072. Cost to repair what's causing Lake Harper. They can either go out the sidewall of our basement out to the shutoff or dig under our porch and out. Either way gives us an extra $40 charge from the city - $20 to turn the water off and another $20 to turn it back on. They also have to remove a section of the sidewalk and I wonder...who gets to pay for that?
I have talked to Amber almost every day. Still no change. The contractions come and go. She tried the old wives tale of drinking Castor oil only to call me twice to tell me that it didn't work. The last I was told is they are going to induce labor on January 4. I'll let you know if I hear differently.
Here's to a new year with it's own rewards and new challenges. Happy New Year!
